As the Fear Free theory of veterinary care continues to take hold, its effects are being felt throughout every aspect of the profession, including clinic design, according to Veterinary Economics Hospital Design Conference speaker Heather Lewis, AIA, NCARB. One aspect of Fear Free that's turning thinking about design around is that of species separation—the idea of eliminating stressful exposure to other animals during a hospital visit.

"Trying to understand how we can achieve really good species separation while still achieving a hospital that's efficient, open, collaborative—these are the challenges that we're currently facing," she says.
