Chances are that no matter the size or layout of your veterinary hospital, space is still at a premium. It may be tempting to chisel away at (or eliminate completely) areas that don't translate clearly to revenue, such as the reception area.

However, HospitalDesign360 speaker Vicki Pollard, CVT, AIA, says this space serves a necessary function. As an alternative to axing the area altogether, Pollard suggests reimagining reception: Replace that stereotypical space-eating desk with a small kiosk, for example.

"Instead of thinking of it as cutting out reception, think of it as your waiting room being a more flexible environment for your clients," she says.
