At the 2017 Veterinary Economics Hospital Design Conference in Kansas City, Missouri, we asked the winner of the Veterinary Economics Hospital Design Conference Specialty Hospital of the Year what sage wisdom he could pass on to people who may be just starting to build their hospital.

Michael O’Dea, DVM, of Pet Emergency Clinic and Referral Center in Spokane, Washington, recommends:

  1. Getting wish lists from the whole hospital team

  2. Using lists to keep yourself organized

  3. Banking some sleep before the process gets started:

“Feel comfortable with the fact that nothing will go exactly as planned,” Dr. O’Dea says. “Make a lot of lists. Lists help you get through problems. Understand that you can’t make everyone happy, but you can strive to do your best.”
